La Ruta Maya - Mayan Route

Tzotzil Mayas cooking corn, Zinacantan, Chiapas, Mexico

Picture of Tzotzil Mayas cook corn that they sell to local people in Zinacantan Village, Chiapas Mexico.

Zinacantan is a Tzotzil speaking municipality just west of San Cristobal de las Casas in the Chiapas Highlands. The name "Zinacantan" means "place of bats", derived from the Aztec language, Nahuatl. A stone bat was the patron deity of Zinacantecos.

Flowers have become important to the Tzotzil Mayas in Zinacantan and some villagers sell flowers at San Cristobal de las Casas.
